I put this assignment on the back burner, I thought it was going to be a pain for sure until I saw the templates in Google Docs. I also know how to use the blogger which would have been a good source. Say goodbye to the poster boards!!! This is so much better and you don't have to run to the store the night before the project is due if you kids forgot to tell you about the assignment!!!

Here's my link to Fort Custer in Kalamazoo, Michigan.....................

I really enjoyed doing this assignment. I learned so much more about the history of Goodland, KS and Sherman County that I did not know. I am originally from Montana. I can think of so many neat ideas to do with this.

This was an experience for me. I actually learned a lot about Liberal when I did this project. I think that this tool can be used as a class project where all the kids can have some input from their place of birth and come up with a great diverse community map for their classroom.

This project ended up being a pain because I had hoped to use voice thread, but could not get my microphone to work. It kept cutting in and out. I ended up using letter pop instead. I think the idea of creating an online field trip is good and I liked researching my home town, but putting the presentation together ended up taking too much time!

It meets the following standards:

Benchmark 1: Geographic Tools and Location: The student uses maps, graphic representations, tools, and technologies to locate, use, and present information about

people, places, and environments.

Benchmark 4: Human Systems: The student understands how economic, political, cultural, and social processes interact to shape patterns of human populations, interdependence, cooperation, and conflict.

Benchmark 1: The student understands the significance of important individuals and major developments in history.

So obviously this project hasn't been going too well for me. It's not that I was intimidated but I really wanted to do it on fall harvest since we own a 5 generation family farm. As soon as we got the assignment, it started raining, and harvest stopped for over a week. Then I got some really great video of all aspects of the harvest. I was very excited. Then I spent another week and a half struggling to get my video camera and vista to recognize each other! Finally I gave up. My field trip is now a voicethread about another Haskell County mainstay, feed lots. I'm disappointed that I didn't get to use video, but I hope you like it.

I chose 5th grade Geography standards, BM 1, Ind. 1 and BM 4, Ind. 4.

I, as usual, had problems. I was on a site that lead me nowhere for about two hours and then when I finally read some of your reflections; I went to google docs. I tried to save regularly and the site kept telling me the connection with google had to be reestablished and I was a little confused by the yellow! error that kept coming up. I think that virtual fieldtrips can be a great idea, but I don't know that we can all be as lucky as the teachers that were sent to other countries to make a field trip.

So, this is what I've got... http://docs.google.com/PresentationEditor?id=dfgbm93c_18fphqg9dw hopefully it works...
I guess it did get my feet wet and hopefully the next time I try I won't be as frusterated and I can make something a little more worthwile... :)

I think this is a great idea to help students learn about things they may not totally be able to see in person. I also think that is would be a good idea to create a virtual field trip of your own classroom. I think this would be an especially good idea for science teachers that work in labs. The teacher could show the students personally, but then have a virtual field trip posted for them to review. The project that I did was basically a powerpoint presentation in which I added sound, video, and tons of pictures too. I was not able to upload the entire presentation to my website because of space restrictions, but there is also a preview of it on their. My standards are also listed on my website as well as at the end of the presentation.

I did my virtual field trip on the town where I currently live and teach. It is on Bird City, KS, a small town of about 400 - it is a rural community where agriculture and livestock are the biggest means of living. I think this is a great way for people to learn about other places that they normally wouldn't have a chance to visit. There are many kids in big cities that don't realize how different places are within their own country. I enjoyed this project, I used google presentation on mine. It was an easy application to use.
